Spirit of Asia : Who are the Uyghur?

My comment;
A European friend of mine was of the opinion that all the oil and gas fields of the world which had fueled industries in the recent years happened to be where people from Judeo Christian and Islamic tradition were living . He didn't live to see the rise of China. The Uyghurs happen to be of the Islamic faith and living on the land which is full of resources which could be used for industries in China, and it is only natural that they have not been lucky enough to get their independence like their Uzbeck and Tajik neighbors. The fall of the Soviet Union allowed the people of these regions to gain their autonomy from the Russians (for good reasons or not) and Russia itself is a land full of natural resources and doesn't depend on these smaller regions. I am wondering if my friend was right about the hand of God putting certain people in certain places on earth ?
